For many Americans, the beginning of a new year is a time to make resolutions. While most of these resolutions take familiar forms, families should consider making the resolution to prepare a plan to help keep their families safe in the event of an emergency. With this in mind, our own Tony Pirani of Caddell Reynolds visited the set of Good Day NWA to discuss Emergency Preparedness for the entire family.
Why We Plan?
A disaster can take many forms—including floods, fires, tornadoes, and more. For families, making a detailed and organized plan can help them stay prepared for any type of catastrophic event. A disaster can take place at any time in any place. When disaster strikes, most Americans will have very little time to respond. That is why Caddell Reynolds urges all citizens to create a kit, make a plan, and stay informed. Knowing what to do ahead of time can help save time, property, and—most importantly of all—lives.
Make a Kit
When assembling an emergency kit, make sure you have essential items to sustain your entire family for three to four days. The most important thing to have on hand in any disaster is clean water. Experts suggest you store one gallon of water per person per day—allowing enough for drinking, food preparation, and hygiene. Be sure to also store sufficient drinking water for pets. Other essential items to have on-hand include:
- A three-to-four-day supply of shelf-stable, easy-to-prepare foods for every family member
- A battery-powered radio or TV, flashlights, headlamps, and extra batteries for all devices
- A first aid kit with common OTC medications—and extra prescription medications, if needed
- Sanitation and hygiene items; including toiletries, hand sanitizer, and chlorine bleach
- Household items, including detergent, disinfectant, trash bags, and a lidded plastic bucket
