BankruptcyIncreasing Awareness Of Distracted Driving

March 18, 20190

Every day, vehicle collisions caused by distracted driving kill at least nine Americans—and injure 100 more. That is why the National Safety Council (NSC) has declared next month, April, as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Distracted Driving Awareness Month provides an opportunity for us to recognize the dangers of—and eliminate preventable deaths caused by—distracted driving and we can start even sooner. Here is more information about distracted driving to prepare for Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have recently released the results of a survey on distracted driving in the U.S. According to their results, cellphone manipulations have increased 57% percent over previous surveys.

About the Survey Results

IIHS research indicates manipulation of a cellphone contributed to more than 800 traffic deaths on roads in the U.S. in 2017. A roadside survey by IIHS indicated motorists were 57% more likely to be using a cell phone compared to those from a survey from 2014.

The total number of drivers observed manipulating cellphones rose from 2.3 percent in 2014 to 3.4 percent in 2018. At the same time, a 2018 nationwide survey from the Foundation for Traffic Safety—part of the American Automobile Association (AAA)—found 64% of survey respondents indicate distracted driving is a more-serious problem versus three years ago.

Listing Distractions

On average, 23% of drivers participated in one or more distracting activities beyond cellphone use. Such activities included:

  • Manipulating the Car’s Audio System
  • Manipulating Climate-Control Systems
  • Manipulating Electronic Devices
  • Talking or Singing While Driving
  • Operating Other Vehicle Systems
  • Eating or Drinking While Driving
  • Personal Grooming While Driving
  • Reading Printed Materials
