With spring weather coming, more Arkansas residents will be taking to the roads. That means drivers must share the road with bicycle and motorcycles—as well as passenger cars and tractor trailers. With this in mind, attorney Tony Pirani of Caddell Reynolds visited Good Day NWA to discuss how drivers can remain vigilant. A video clip of the appearance appears available below.
Accident Statistics in Arkansas
There were 1,326 motorcycle accidents in Arkansas in 2014—of which 64 resulted in fatalities. That same year, there were 78 fatal truck accidents in the state—with most of the fatalities representing pedestrians, cyclists, or the occupants of smaller passenger vehicles.
Causes of Tractor-Trailer Accidents
The sheer weight of a tractor-trailer means they are capable of inflicting severe injuries in a collision. Some common causes of tractor-trailer accidents include:
- Falling or Shifting Cargo
- Poor Maintenance or Repair
- Excessive Driver Fatigue
- Inclement Weather Conditions
Causes of Motorcycle Accidents
The exposure of motorcyclists puts them at high risk of injuries in a collision—including traumatic brain injury. Common causes of motorcycle accidents include:
- Unsafe or Sudden Lane Changes
- Riding Between Lanes (Splitting)
- Sudden or Erratic Stops
- Passenger Vehicles Turning
Accident Prevention Means Sharing the Road
Be attentive. Stay focused. Remain alert. Aggressive driving creates dangerous situations. To prevent accidents, check your blind spots—the greatest cause of accidents involving bicycles and motorcycles. Be cautious when passing a motorcycle, bicycle, or tractor-trailer. Allow extra space between vehicles when changing lanes. Remember that you may not see a motorcycle or bicycle—and a tractor trailer typically requires a significant distance to stop.
