A popular tour boat capsized on Table Rock Lake in Branson, Missouri after being rocked by a sudden, raging storm late last week. In the aftermath, seventeen passengers were killed and another seven were left injured. A full article on the incident appears here.

A Troubling History

In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; a 2010 accident killed two when another duck boat was struck by a barge after stalling on the water. In 1999, a duck boat sank in Hot Springs, Arkansas—killing 13 passengers. This incident prompted both the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to investigate. They would later call for changes to how they are regulated.

A Family Devasted

The accident—one of the deadliest in duck boat history—occurred after a strong storm hit Table Rock Lake. The boat—an amphibious craft popular with tourists—overturned in the strong currents. The incident left seventeen dead, including nine members of a single family visiting Branson on vacation. The victims ranged in age from one to 76.

A Genuine Tragedy

The boat that capsized—a craft based on the amphibious vehicles used during World War II—was equipped with life jackets. However, authorities do not know exactly how many passengers wore them. Video footage depicting previous duck boat tours showing life jackets stowed on-board, but that few passengers actually wore them. While U.S. Coast Guard regulations require life jackets for each passenger on a duck boat, they allow the ship’s crew to instruct passengers when to wear them.

The Numbers on Life Jackets

Wearing a flotation vest while boating is a simple way to save lives. Statistics on drowning deaths indicate a troubling trend:

  • Nearly 600 American die annually in boat accidents
  • Almost 80% of boating fatalities are drowning deaths
  • Some 90% of these victims were not wearing life vests
