Drowsy and distracted driving pose a serious safety risk to others on our roads. These can cause serious accidents and injuries. But, is there a way to prevent the two of the most common dangerous habits while driving?

According to a recent article, BlyncSync, a startup company based out of Oklahoma City, hopes its wearable technology could do just that and improve safety on our roads.

Dangerous Driving Statistics

According to the American Sleep Foundation, about half of adult drivers admit to consistently getting behind the wheel while feeling drowsy.

They also reveal that about 20% admit to falling asleep behind the wheel at some point in the past year, with more than 40% of drivers admitting they have fallen asleep behind the wheel at least once in during driving.

As for distracted driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 421,000 people across the United States were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted driving.

Technology that Could Help

The key component is the company’s smart safety glasses, which CEO Austin Green said is the latest in biometric-capable wearable technology.

BlyncSync’s products include eyewear that can monitor a driver’s eyes for signs of fatigue, distraction and other deadly roadway conditions.

The Functionality of Smart Eyewear

BlyncSync is looking to program these glasses to monitor certain information on an individual like blink rates, fatigue patterns and other biometric information that could potentially alert an individual about dangerous driving habits.
